"HELP!"
Updated 1-10-05

"Now that I'm on the internet,

How on
Earth do I
Learn about
People, Places and Things?"

Welcome to the HELP Page. The purpose of this page is to help those who are new to the internet gain a basic understanding of what it is, what things are, how they work and how to navigate it.  The following are a collection of primers, tutorials, how-to's and resources and have been included with the permission of their owners. We hope you find it useful, and that you will bookmark it so you can find it again. (Look at the menus at the top of your screen for one called bookmark, or add URL, favorites, save this address, etc.)

This page is always under construction.

First, please do not continue the cycle of virus warnings and chain letters. All they do is take up bandwidth. Consult the CIAC - they're the experts.

Adware - Generically, adware (spelled all lower case) is any software application in which advertising banners are displayed while the program is running. The authors of these applications include additional code that delivers the ads, which can be viewed through pop-up windows or through a bar that appears on a computer screen. The justification for adware is that it helps recover programming development cost and helps to hold down the cost for the user.  More info here

Buying things using the Web - Yes, you can buy things over the internet, BUT you need to make sure that you are on a secure site for transmitting credit card numbers. For example, on Netscape 3.0, the broken key in the bottom left hand corner becomes solid. On Netscape Communicator 4.0, the unlocked padlock becomes locked.

Chat  - Chat is real-time typing back and forth on your computer screen with someone or a group of people in a chat "room". There are many chat programs such as AOL's  Instant Messenger ICQ, and  mIRC.

Pop-up - A pop-up is a graphical user interface (GUI) display area, usually a small window, that suddenly appears ("pops up") in the foreground of the visual interface. Pop-ups can be initiated by a single or double mouse click or rollover (sometimes called a mouseover), and also possibly by voice command or can simply be timed to occur. A pop-up window must be smaller than the background window or interface; otherwise, it's a replacement interface. More info here
