Captain
Kidd and the Mohegan Indians
A Mohegan
man had a dream one night where he saw a light under a great tree with
a large boulder nearby. The dream was so vivid that when he awoke he told
a trustworthy friend that he was sure that gold must be buried at that
very site.
When nightfall came, the two Mohegans took their shovels into the woods
and at last came upon the great tree and the large boulder. They went to
the spot where the light had appeared and began digging. Soon, one of the
shovels hit a metal box. As they uncovered the box they could see that
it must surely hold a great treasure. One of the men grew so excited, he
let out a yell, and suddenly a skeleton of a man appeared dressed in a
long robe! When the men looked down in the hole they had dug, the box had
disappeared!
The two were so frightened, they threw down their shovels and ran as fast
as they could, not stopping until they reached the safety of their homes.
It is needless to say, they never again ventured near that part of the
woods again.
Why did their box of gold disappear? Why did they see such a grotesque
figure of a man? Now, everyone knows that when Captain Kidd buried his
fortune he always killed one of his crew and threw him in the pit with
the gold before covering it. This was so that the spirit of the dead pirate
would guard his treasure against any who might seek to take it.
And of course Indian legend has it that if a man dreams of a spot where
treasure might be buried, he should take with him a close friend to that
spot to find their fortune. And when they see the treasure, they must both
be very quiet, for if a word is spoken, the pirate guarding the treasure
will suddenly appear, and the treasure they had seen will surely disappear.
Most people have heard the legendary stories about Captain Kidd and his
pirate adventures, but most people are not aware that this famous bandit
made regular trips to the Connecticut
River
area and stayed there with the Indians.
In fact, many of the Mohegan, Pequot and Narragansett tales about hidden
treasures stem from the time when Captain Kidd would roam through their
land, supposedly burying
treasure
chests of gold.
To this day, we have not heard a legend about anyone actually digging up
and keeping a buried treasure. Maybe someone has but never told the story?
Makes one wonder . . . how
many
chests of gold are still buried out there in the woods on the northeast
coast? If you should have a dream about a buried treasure, and you should
be so lucky as to dig up that treasure, remember to be very quiet and not
utter a word, for who knows what the pirate spirit might do!
Hate not the Man
who brings bitter words against you...
Learn from Him what it is you do not want to become...
Feel His pain, for His suffering is heavy, it is painful for the
Soul to be so... full of hatred.
The eyes are said to be the windows of our Souls, if so then
may I always see my way to be loving to others and may
I not be brought
into the darkness that He see's and may I
always walk in the loving light of the
Great Spirit...
